Chapter Fourteen

Nix

My fingers caressed the spines of the books on Nate’s shelves. I’d been in here all morning, knowing that Nate had stored my father’s signet ring, crown, and seal somewhere. So far my search had come up empty, except for one locked drawer in Nate’s desk. I would have to wait until he woke up to sift through its contents.

Or I could just ask where he kept the royal symbols.

I rubbed my tired eyes. I’d managed a few hours of sleep, but I was restless. I couldn’t shake this urgency over finding the royal symbols. The night my parents had been murdered, Nate had brought me to this room and said he’d keep the symbols safe until I was ready to be king.

Was I just being paranoid about Nate’s home having been broken into? I sighed and settled into Nate’s desk chair, resting my eyes.

“Tired?”

My eyes popped open at the sound of Zoe’s voice. “You’re up.”

It was a weak greeting, but I didn’t know what else to say. Her long hair cascaded around her face, her eyes captivating me. For a moment, the woman who visited my dream blended with Zoe before me, reminding me that her dream-self had promised to help me.

As she approached and sat down, I noticed that there was something different about her. Her edginess was gone and she seemed almost vulnerable.

“How’s Nate?” I asked.

Zoe shrugged. “Better. He’s awake and eating. Pat says the break in his leg is healed but will need time to fully repair.”

She fiddled with her shirt and then it hit me: she was nervous, not as strictly composed as she usually was.

“And you?”

Zoe didn’t answer right away. She let her eyes wander around Nate’s office. I followed her gaze, wondering what she was looking at.

“Okay,” she finally said.

She didn’t seem forthcoming about what had happened last night, even though it had to be bothering her.

I grabbed a stylus off the desktop and began twirling it across my knuckles in an attempt to distract myself. I thought of last night and the change that had come over her. It had been like a beast coming alive… she hadn’t been herself in that moment. After she’d slaughtered the guards, she had smiled triumphantly, then the dragons had landed on her, causing her to pass out.

And when she’d come to, she was Zoe again. I studied her, fascinated by the enigma she represented.

Nate had told me to be honest with her. Was this the right time to tell her who I really was? I had been about to do it yesterday, but Cocoa had interrupted. I opened my mouth to speak—

“My parents,” Zoe said, cutting me off before I could begin. “Well, I told you they experimented on me.”

Her voice was barely above a whisper and she rubbed her chest, her gaze focused on her lap. Her free hand trembled as her thumb ran over the dagger tattoo etched on the opposite forearm.

Zoe seemed so open in this moment. So innocent. When her brow furrowed, there was a slight shake to the way she took a breath.
